New Zealand, South Island - Photos
Hokitika sunset
Aptly named sunset point presented one of most gorgeous ocean sunsets I have ever enjoyed. The light just kept coming and changing and deepening as though the light really did not want to turn into night.

Pancake Rocks
What incredible rock formations. I have long enjoyed the rocky coastline of the west coast, and the New England coast, but I have never seen rock formations like these.

Yellow eyed penguins coming out of ocean
On a private beach, southeast of Duneden, yellow eyed penguins come onto shore after a day of feeding in the ocean.

Yellow eyed penguins are essentially solitary creatures. On shore they stay in burrows in the low hills above the beach

An innocent on shore. There is something mystical about how awkward penguins are on land, and yet how at ease they are.

Leaping Dolphin, Doubtful Sound
Our ship had caught with, and slowly passed, a small pod of dolphins. I pre focused my camera on a spot where the pod was swimming, hoping one would jump. And, blessings of blessings, one did. This shot is one of most memorable. (And, NO, I did NOT transpose a dolphin from one picture into this one :)

Doubtful Sound clouds and cliffs
The rain in Doubtful Sound creates not only thick rain forest type vegetation, but also provides excellent atmospheric effects. There is a distinct air of primordial mystery here.

Ship Mast, Doubtful Sound
Predawn found me on deck, enjoying the stillness and the slight rocking of the ship. This mast was illuminated, creating a contrast to the star filled skill. I set up my tripod, and hoped that the ships movement would not blur the image. The result was much more dramatic than I thought it would be.

Waterfall and sea, Doubtful Sound
In many places, the waterfalls of Doubtful Sound enter the water without any degree of visibility. This one, near the Tasman Sea, showed off itself fully. I enjoyed seeing the color contrasts of the two states of water, one fresh, one salty.

Pancake Rocks looking south
Such incredible textures of rock. I wish we could have stayed here several days in order to see the light change the colors of the rocks, and to see the waves pounding upwards at high tide.

Early morning clouds
This island in Doubtful Sound was dramatically crowned with clouds before breakfast. The light and clouds were changing so fast, that it was difficult to go inside for breakfast. The breakfast was absolutely delicious and should have taken at least an hour to enjoy fully. But how can you feed your stomach when there is so much beauty for your eye outside?

Sail in Doubtful Sound
After motoring to the Sound's outlet at the Tasman Sea, the sail was raised, and we enjoyed the sunshine and the wind.

Doubtful Sound morning colors
We were lucky not to be in the continuous rain that Doubtful Sound sometimes receives. Rather, the clouds produced occasional mist, but more often the sky was a continuing drama of ever moving, ever changing clouds.

All beaches have a distinct personality. However, Wharariki Beach at the northern most tip of New Zealand combines ruggedness with nuances. Light and color and reflections join in the late afternoon sun at low tide.

Punakaiki Pancake Rocks rainbow
Just after sunrise on the beach below the campground at Punakaiki beach by Pancake Rocks, this partial rainbow appeared. I was alone on the beach; everyone else was still sleeping. Mysterious moments like these are rare and I was swept into a few ethereal moments of eternity.

Ocean View Chalets Marahau
The Ocean View Chalets are the most wonderful place to stay in the Abel Tasman National Park area. Located in Marahau, on the edge of the Park, they provide a restful, gorgeous place to enjoy this serenely beautiful area. The chalets are spacious, including a large living area, kitchen, and deck. as well as bedrooms that look over the bay. Robert is a great, knowledgeable host, who also cooks a fine breakfast! Pancake Rocks sunset
Pancake Rocks is one of the most spectacular beach sites you will find anywhere in the world. Formed with the 'pancake'-layering of the limestone (created by immense pressure on alternating hard and soft layers of marine creatures and plant sediments), the composition is unique, as are the views. Meg and I camped next to here in a rented camper van in November 2010. The beach walk to the rocks was excellent. You can pick up beautiful rounded pure white rocks.
