This was a fun photo shoot. I had arrived at the Painted Hills after dark. I drove to a small vehicle turnout, and parked. I put a tarp, sleeping pad, and sleeping bag on the ground and slept out under a clear sky and bright stars. Waking up at dawn, I drove over to this lake and waited for the sunrise. As you can see, the wait was rewarded.

Painted HIlls wildflowers
In late spring, brightly colored wildflowers contrast with the incredible colors of the Painted Hills. The light on these flowers was remarkable. I waited and waited in the late afternoon for the clouds to clear. Finally, just before the sun went down behind the hills to the west, a narrow band of sky open up, and illuminated these flowers and the hills.

Borax Lake
Borax Lake, at the southern end of the Alvord, near Fields, is fed by hot springs which contain a high concentration of borate. When the hot springs evaporate, a high concentration of alkali is left behind. Between 1892 and 1902, about 400 tons of borax were boiled down and crystalized annually. Mule teams transported this processed borax to the railhead at Winnemucca, NV, a distance of 120 miles. Borax Lake is now owned by The Nature Conservancy, and offers excellent birding.

Obscure by Oregon geography standards, the Zumwalt Prairie in the extreme northeast corner of Oregon represents a wonderfully diverse ecological niche. As set out in the book, "The Prairie Keepers" by Marcy Houle, this area demonstrates how ranchers and grazing and wildlife "not only can coexist, but in some instances must coexist." A single gravel road accesses these thousands and thousands of acres, where nature and silence have scarcely been disturbed from time immemorial. Whether one photographs, reads, or meditates, the silence makes its own music.
