Day in, day out, he focuses on his wool. I have no idea how long he has been at this work. And, as you can also see,his wife is there with him, in the simple sweetness of companionship. I was truly privileged to be there.

Third world concrete pour, third world concrete, third world cement,Ecuador work,Ecuador cement, third world laborConcrete pour

Catamayo is an airport town, half an hour from Loja i southern Ecuador. It is not part of the tourist path. Most of the people were grateful to be employed in a variety of manual jobs. I watched this man throughout the day, creating these cement pylons. He would come part way down the ladder, his work mate would hand him a bucket of cement, he would climb back up the ladder, lift the bucket above his head, and pour it into the form. All day, no safety standards, no workers comp if he is injured, day after day, job after job.

"As a former concrete inspector, I would not want to be in the structure below during an earthquake. Assuming the concrete is of decent quality (a big assumption), placing it by bucket in a column of that size means that it will not be properly consolidated. The tragedy is that these things keep going up all over the developing world every day. It is only a matter of time before Ecuador will become the next Pakistan, China or Haiti. It is entirely preventable with a building inspection program." Wes Hare, former city manager of La Grande

"We just finished pouring about 800 yards of concrete for the new Bio-Diesel Blending facility here in Ontario for PC Enerergy and don\'t believe we used a single 5 gallon bucket. And our forming material was much easier to work with and maybe our ladders were in much better condition....they must not have an OSHA inspector that is as caring as ours. By the way using a pump truck is much easier than buckets and ladders. I would be courious to know if the engineering of these buildings will meet all of the IBC for earth quake and wind as well as adequate strength for multi-level construction." This man with the colorful brooms walked by us where we were having lunch in a small town between Loja and Vilcabamba. I could only speculate about how heavy the brooms were, how far he had walked already and how far he still had to go, and how much he would earn for his labors. The brooms were striking in their colors, but they did not overshadow the thoughts of how hard this work must be.

Day after day, with no time off for sickness or vacation, this Ecuadorian man moved heavy sacks of grain from a grain dealership to lift up to a bus outside the shop for delivery someplace around the town of Catamayo.
